Nancy Wake: The Passing of a Wartime Legend

Aged 98, the World War II heroine Nancy Wake, passed away in hospital on August the 7th, 2011, leaving behind an amazing and inspiring legacy. Enemy to the Nazis, Nancy Wake was not a woman to stand on the sidelines and watch the men go to war, serving as a spy for the British and a liaison between English and French Intelligence. With the lives of hundreds of allied soldiers in her hands, Wake was not afraid to make life and death decisions and be ruthless with her enemies. Her elusiveness and cunning earned her the nickname of the White Mouse by her foes as she avoided capture and discovery in face of great danger. As a recipient of the Companion of the Order of Australia, the George Medal, the Officier de la Légion d'Honneur, the Croix de guerre, the Medal of Freedom and the RSA Badge in Gold, Nancy Wake is certainly worthy of honour and remembrance and her passing from this world is a sad affair.
