The headline of an online podcast by the ABC news reads "Missing teenager's parents hopeful after human bones discovered" which testifies to the tragedy of the case where the parents are hopeful that their son's remains will finally be recovered. Daniel Morcombe was presumed to have been abducted from the Sunshine Coast in December of 2003 and despite the constant television broadcasts and ongoing police efforts, his disappearance has remained a mystery for the past eight years. Human remains discovered in the dense forest of the Sunshine Hinterland are believed to be that of the young boy's, although DNA testing will take weeks to verify. However, the police commissioner has conceded that the shoes found at the crime scene are the same brand as the ones Daniel was wearing the day of his disappearance. These new and rapid developments have emerged since the arrest of 41 year old Brett Peter Cowan, and although he has not yet confessed, today's class discussion has us questioning how these new developments are possible without someone close to the accused giving up information. The leading theory is that Cowan's girlfriend has flipped on her partner and revealed that Cowan was within the vicinity of Morcombe at the time of his disappearance, however this is yet to be confirmed. It is unlikely that the police decided to pick a spot in the middle of nowhere and just happened to stumble across remains. Even if the bones do not belong to Morcombe (although it is increasingly likely that they are), they do belong to someone and so a crime has been committed either way.
